What is high-speed wireless?
Wireless Internet, commonly referred to as broadband, is Internet access through radio waves, therefore No Phone Lines are needed, so you are virtually "Wireless." It is a high-speed cost effective solution for Internet access. There is no need to worry about slow down loads, busy signals, or disconnections anymore, with Wireless Internet your computer is always on the Internet. Using a brand new technology, WorldConnX Wireless was the first company to bring cost effective, high speed Internet access to the area. Each Wireless Internet subscriber has a small radio receiver and an antenna. The receiver has a network connection that plugs into a single computer or a router if you have more than one computer. The antenna receives a signal from the base antennas located at strategic points throughout the WorldConnX Wireless Internet access area, and is then transferred to the Internet Backbone.
What is the advantage of Wireless Internet?

The advantage of Wireless is the speed and direct connection, in addition to bypassing the local telephone company. By eliminating the phone company from the local loop there no longer are the issues inherent with antiquated local phone lines. Wireless Internet allows a much faster connection than the standard dial in connection at a fraction of the cost of leasing a dedicated T1 line from the phone company. A T1 line can be very expensive, with high installation fees, equipment costs, and monthly fees to both the phone company and your Internet provider.
A normal dial up connection with a 56K modem, working properly, on a noise free phone line will download at a rate of approximately 5kbps, with a 384k wireless, connecting rate would be approximately 80 kbps. In less technical terms, it means if it took you seven minutes to download a picture with a dial up connection, it will take approximately seven seconds to download the same picture with a wireless connection. In addition, the connection with a modem is limited to a maximum of 56k, but a wireless radio can be set anywhere from 128k to 45mbs. A wireless Internet connection's speed depends on the plan you purchase. At an absolute maximum your connection has the capability of receiving information at about 1.544mb per second, equal to the speed of a T1 connection or greater.
Many times you might find yourself sitting on your computer waiting up to 5 minutes just for one home page to load. Most of the time is because it is "Content Rich" Meaning it has many pictures and active moving things, sometimes even sound. It is very hard for a slow modem connection to process so much information. As the Internet evolves so will "Content". People are finding new ways to express themselves through "Content Rich Pages", leaving modem users frustrated because they have to wait for the pages to load. With fast Wireless Internet access, there is no need to wait, you can play real time videos and games, play your favorite MP3 in real time, watch live video streams, send and receive files at blazing speeds, and best of all, general browsing is more enjoyable.
Why do I need Wireless Internet?
Unlike large metropolitan areas, connectivity alternatives to a dial up connection, such as DSL or cable are not available in all areas. Where they are available, once the service is in place there is a tendency to oversell and then it becomes slower. In order for businesses in rural areas, such as ours, to remain competitive and individual Internet users to keep pace with the rest of the world, an economically feasible alternative had to be found. That alternative is wireless broadband or fixed-point wireless.
How secure is the signal?
The Israelis used this technology for military application. The nature of wireless makes it very difficult to intercept. The hopping sequence could be observed but only in the case of one unit transmitting as an access point without other units in proximity. As soon as more than one unit is in use, it becomes exponentially more difficult to isolate one signal. A community string is used to allow only approved radio clients to associate with an Access Point. Encryption can be used to further secure the signal at the radio level and encryption boxes can be positioned at each end of the link to further protect the signal.
Do radio waves pose a danger to the consumer?
All equipment operates within the industry standards. A typical cell phone has a power output of twenty times more than the wireless equipment. Extensive research on the safety of exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic energy has been carried out for more than four decades. This research is continually reviewed and interpreted by committees of scientist who develop safe limits for exposure. Manufacturers of wireless equipment monitor this research and participate in the consensus standards process and ensure that Wireless products operate within the guidelines of these standards. Consequently, manufacturers of these products believe their products are safe.
Will I have to learn anything new to use this system?
If you already know how to use a Web browser, you will find our system totally transparent. You are always online. You click on your browser icon, and you are online with no delay - no waiting for a free line or a connection.
What equipment is needed?
For a typical setup for a wireless Internet connection you will need at **Minimum**:
- A computer that is capable of running Windows 95 or greater with a network card
- An additional router for businesses that would like to share Internet access with multiple computers on their network
- A Wireless Access kit that contains a Subscriber Access Radio, Antenna, cable and mounting brackets. (Wireless access kits are leased by the subscriber and remain the property of WorldConnX)
What does the equipment look like?
The radio receiver is about the size of a small paperback book. The antennas range in size from a 24" x 36" grilled directional unit to a small 4" x 10" oval shaped antenna. They are all very lightweight and no more difficult to install than a DishTV or Direct TV dish. The cables used for exterior mounting come in set lengths, but can be ordered longer, and sometimes shorter, depending on the application. The cables are 1/4" in diameter, with the connections being slightly larger. The cable is fairly flexible, but should not be bent too sharply.
Do I need a phone line?
NO! A phone line is not needed. The Wireless Internet connection is Bi-directional, meaning your unit will send and receive information. This makes it a complete solution for Internet connectivity.
Is Internet access unlimited?
With Wireless Internet access, your computer is always connected. There are no time limits or restrictions of how long you can use it. Your computer is connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Is this the same as "satellite" Internet?
No! Wireless Internet is bi-directional, unlike satellite solutions, where you download via the dish antenna, but you are also connected by a phone line to the Internet for uploading information. This wireless solution eliminates the need for any dedicated phone lines, and therefore, reduced your costs, while providing data rates much better than possible with modems or ISDN.
Can I run servers on this connection?
Yes, Clients wishing to resell services over a wireless link will need to pay for that ability. The running of servers of any kind is prohibited in the basic wireless access plan.
Will I still need my modem?
No, Wireless Internet connections do not require a modem. However, you will need to keep your modem in your computer if you use it for fax services.
How long will it take to install?
Once your location has been surveyed and approved for wireless, a date will be set for installing your unit. When a service tech is on-sight, it could take from 20 minutes to 1 hour. Each location will be specific to its own needs and obstacles.
How much does it cost?
Monthly fees can start as low as $49, although some locations are hard to reach, and will require additional hardware to make the connection. This will change as the infrastructure grows and WorldConnX installs more access points throughout the area.
Can I get Wireless Internet in my area?
To receive WorldConnX Wireless Internet Access, a site survey must be done. This tells us if access is available in that area, what type of radio and antenna is needed, and the distance and complexity of running cable from the antenna to the radio. Once this is determined, the actual set up usually takes less than an hour. There is a one time set up fee, which ranges from $150 to $650 and a monthly fee starting at $49.95 depending on the bandwidth desired (from 256k to 512k). You will receive an email address, 30MB web page space, web mail and calendar, and virus and spam protection.
